Pope John XXIII was the one who opened the Second Vatican Council in 1962 and presided over its first session. Unfortunately the elderly Pope died of stomach cancer after that first session. Pope Paul VI would be the one to take on the Second Vatican Council in the remaining sessions. It was on November 18, 1965 when the Dei Verbum was promulgated by Pope Paul VI.
